Workbook to Accompany Schola Rosa Digital Subscription ~ Cycle 3

Goals. There are four general goals for the program:

  1. To bring the children into contact with the physical world in enriched experiential encounters
  2. To practice and improve careful observation; a basic tool of learning and an essential first step in all education, including that accomplished by use of the scientific method
  3. To introduce (in 4–6th grades) the basic paradigm of the scientific method
  4. To introduce the basic concepts, terms, and questions of Biology, Geology, Astronomy, Physics, & Chemistry over a three year cycle.

Method. The basic procedure for each unit follows a sequence beginning with observation and experiment followed by a discussion to clarify the description of what is seen, concluded by a discussion of the reasons for the thing being the way it is—the attempt to explain. Drawings and descriptions are recorded along the way. During the week students read primary readings, for example, Jean Henri Fabre’s writings.

Included in this Workbook as well as in the Schola Rosa Digital Subscription:

  • Discussion Lessons
  • Activities to improve science-focused vocabulary
  • Sketchbook activities to improve observation

Not included in this Workbook, but included in the Schola Rosa Digital Subscription:

  • Lesson Plans

"I purchased Alpha Year last summer for my first grader, and we have so thoroughly enjoyed the program. My 2 and a half year old son even loves it!  He loves to recite the poetry and the history. What really astonished me, however, was his ability to apply the information he learned from the songs. I was talking to my husband about our history lesson, and I mentioned 'the king of Persia' and he shouted, 'that's King Cyrus!' " Camille in California
