Religion & Spiritual Formation

Our Holy Faith Series: Previously published by Newman Press and now by St. Augustine Academy Press, the Our Holy Faith series was produced in the late 1950s/early 1960s under the direction of Msgr. Clarence Elwell, who was then superintendent of schools for the diocese of Cleveland, Ohio. With the help of Msgr Fuerst, Professor of Catechetics at St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland, Msgr. Bernard Rattigan, head of the education department at Catholic University of America, and various and sundry teaching Sisters, the various volumes in the series were brought into being. It was conceived with the Baltimore Catechism at its core, presenting the contents of the Catechism in order but doing so in a way that helps to explain the concepts before presenting the Question-and-Answer format for memorization.

Spiritual Formation Courses: These courses are meant to help the students experience the Faith as a lived reality in the midst of their intellectual study of God and the world. Rather than treating religion as just another academic subject, the method for these courses is based on the catechetical model of Christ--apprenticeship, prayer, and discipleship. Hence, though the topics in each course integrate with and complement the material covered in the Trivium/Philosophy/Theology sequence and in the Great Books sequence, the focus is upon learning how to assimilate truth into daily life, ideas into action. The overarching goals of the courses are growth in virtue and holiness and a closer encounter with Christ. Each week includes a live class, material for reading and meditation, and a challenge task for the week. The weekly meetings are dedicated to prayer, lectio divina, discussion, and catechesis, The courses function well as a supplement to parish programs or as the core of a home catechesis program.

"I purchased Alpha Year last summer for my first grader, and we have so thoroughly enjoyed the program. My 2 and a half year old son even loves it!  He loves to recite the poetry and the history. What really astonished me, however, was his ability to apply the information he learned from the songs. I was talking to my husband about our history lesson, and I mentioned 'the king of Persia' and he shouted, 'that's King Cyrus!' " Camille in California
